Simplicity Snow Thrower and Auger Belt
Original Message   Nov 19, 2006 2:30 pm
This message is to thank Marty and PK for their advice. I did check with Simplicity's technical department in Wisconsin to discuss the "problem" and was told that it could very well be the case that the belt needs to be "run in" by a first full use. The "tech" agreed with the dealer and stated that I should use the machine and see if the problem persists.

I tried the machine out again this morning. The temperature was much colder and, in fact, there was no recurrence of the auger problem.  The machine performed well.  However, your advice is well taken and I will be persistent in getting any service required in the future, which should not be a problem as the dealer has a good reputation locally.  For now, it seems reasonable to wait and see how the machine passes its first test.

I would keep the auger handle squeezed for about 5 minutes, then release. I would then
slowly squeeze the auger control a bit at a time to see how "little" it takes before the auger starts to turn. You may be adjusted very near the edge of the spec threshhold.

My Ariens manual is very specific as to how an auger cable is tensioned. I suspect Simplicity has a procedure. I would double check the calibration procedure in your owner's manual just for safety's sake.

If I am out of adjustment on my Ariens, the auger may continue to spin too long which is a safety issue. It also may start to turn unexpectedly. That is another great reason to never use your hand to clear snow from the chute or auger. The engine should be off
anyway to ensure you do not cause any amputations.
