I'm a newbie on this site, so forive me if this has already been discussed.  I couldn't find it  in a quick search.

I have a 9HP Craftsman snowblower, Model 247.888550.  It appears that the bearing at the end of the main drive axle is shot.  The end bolts are tight, yet the axle moves about a 1/4" up & down; enough that the dogg no longer engages in the gear ring .  I tried to loosen the 3/8" bolt on the end, but it didn't seem to want to budge.  I looked at the parts diagram in the owner's manual, and I have to say, it does suck!

And while I'm whining, why is it that they don't give buyers a maintenance manual?  Do they think we're not smart enough or that we'd just tear the machine apart because we happen to have the book, and then wouldn't be able to get them back together?  I digress....  Here are my questions

1.  How do I get the axle loose?  Do I have to be able to get a grip on the hex flange bearing?  If I had to do this, I'd need a wrench about 1/16 thick.  Do I just need to restrain the bolt on the other end of the axle?

2.  What parts should I plan on replacing?  As near as I can figger from the lousy diagram, I might need the hex flange bearing, one or two flange bearings, maybe some washers, and maybe a track drive hub assembly.

I have these things working against me.  I live in a small town in Alaska.  Sears in Anchorage (the nearest Sears) doesn't seem to know anything about the equipment they sell, but they'd be happy to sell me a part if I just give them the part number.  I can't find anyone who knows anything.........  Am I supposed to just order a whole bunch of parts then tear it apart and hope I have the right ones? 

Can you tell I'm a little frustrated?  Can anyone out there help me?  If so, thanks so much.

Go to Sears parts, type in model, request a Muaual.

It will cost you a few bucks, but well worth it!!!

Go to Sears.com, click on lawn and garden, then on the left side click on parts. Put your model number in.  Your snow blower will come up, then click on show diagram. Note item number 7 is the hub assembly.  After you take off the wheel, you will notice where the hub assembly bolts to the frame. Since it is chain drive, you have to be careful but remove the entire hub assembly, then you can knock out the outer bearings (bushings) and replace them. Good luck, Carl
