I think your right Spotted I went to a shop today and the guy told me that could be welded but he said It wont hold because it's steel tempered and its a small gear too my blower is 30 years old so I finally got to the mtd dealer and we found a gear for 23.00$ mtd got plenty of old parts beginning in the 70s. Threy sent me a chart for parts number too. Thanks Did you take a breath when you posted this ramble?

I checked the Shear pins and they are fine...Engine is strong starts on first pull. augers spin... but if I stick a broom in there.. the augers stop..I can also move the augers in reverse by hand,,, Is the prob in the gearbox to which the axel attaches and spins it?? .. The drive shaft is spinning It seems that the prob may be in the gearbox,,, have never run this unit before... Any ideas?? Thanks very much
