Older Ariens wheel and tire upgrade
Original Message   Jan 28, 2006 9:26 am
You may remember a couple of years back when I hopped up my 70's Ariens #922018 with a B&S Intek Snow 7.5. I ve noticed others have used the same motor for tis purpose. This year I added a shoot extension and went to a 6" wheel with a 13X5-6 tire. This is what this little machine really needed. Check it out with original wheel as a reference:

I carefully drilled a 1//4" hole thru wheel and axel and drove in a roll pin. Alot simpler than I thought it was going to be.

Nice job. I put a 7.5 Intek on my old Ariens 10995. It had 6" wheels, so I added 5" Snow Hogs, which I got in eBay for $15 new. I repianted everything and put on new friction disk, bushings, bearings, scraper, and skids.
I even bought a junker just to get the old fashioned hubcaps....

Here's the other side. This is a 1970 that my father bought new. I didn't find anything that won't last another 15 seasons, so it should make 50 and is now being used by the third generation of our extended family.

Wow, better than showroom Garandman. I obviously have'nt done a full restore but the machine is very usable. I also painted the shoot with POR-15 and added the inmpeller rubber kit. Even though its a 20", it keeps up with the newer 824's. I am glad I'm the not the only one who thinks fixing up and improving these older machines is worth while.

Only shortcomings I can see to the old machines are that there's no way to stop the auger from the handlebars, and the rounded housing rides up over hard snow sometimes.
I ran a cord through the kill switch on the motor up to the handlebars, so I can't lose the key, and can kill the engine right away.

Joe I liked your wheel upgrade. I have an old model Ariens Snow-Thro very similar to yours with bald hard solid tires. I have been looking to upgrade to new neumatic tires & rims. I have a 3/4" shaft. Can you tell me where you purchased your rims & tires with part numbers? I have been going nuts but I don't have a model number of my snowblower to go by. Right now I'm using a set of chains, but I would still like to upgrade the wheels. I would have to drill the shaft also buts thats no a problems. This snowblowert is in great shape & works fine. I rebuilt it a few years ago, but I was never able to locate the right rims & tires. Any help you can give me would be great.. Thanks John

Hello,

In the picture you have a tire that is different than the snowhog or the xtrac, can you please tell me what kind of tires those are?

Thanks
