Stihl Grass Trimmer
Original Message   Jun 25, 2005 5:38 pm
I was shopping for a new gas trimmer and I have narrowed the search to a Stihl Model FS 45C with what they call "Easy 2 Start".  It seems to be a good unit and the dealer has been in business for years (not a big box store).  Unit is $169 which seems reasonable when compared to other gas trimmers.

I already have a Stihl leaf blower that works just fine.

Does anyone in the forum have experience with this or a similar model?

I recently purchased an FS55 RC which cost me $199. It doesn't have the EZ Start (must be last year's model), but it starts easily. It can be equipped with the metal blades for heavier duty use. It requires 89 octane gas (next step up from regular 87). It has much more power than my former Ryobi which had about the same engine displacement.

What mix do these Stihl trimmers use? 50:1, 40:1 or other?

My Stihl calls for 50:1; my Ryobi had been 32:1

That's good to know. A Stihl is on my short list when it comes time to replace my old Sears electric trimmer, and 50:1 mix with 89 octane is the same mix I use for my Toro snowblower.

I have the Stihl FS 55 and it is great.  It is not as smooth as th Echo my neighbor has to be totally honest, but it is not difficult to handle either.  IT has a ton of power, more than my neighbor's Echo which is the main reason I went with it over the Echo.  You will not be disapppointed with this model.

Thanks everyone for your comments.  I purchased the Stihl 45C and it is a joy to use.  Starts real easy and boy does it chew up the weeds.  The bonus was a $20 rebate.
