pull start on ariens 1128
Original Message   Dec 28, 2004 9:08 pm
Tryed to post this on "WTB" but not to many replies so I will try this site. Ok after running my ariens for the first time for about an hour I shut it down for about 5 to 10 minutes then went to go and start it again the pull start felt like it had a lot of force behind it but I pulled it anyway and the cord broke so I fixed the cord but it still has a lot of force behind it. Any ideas on how to fix the problem?

You have electric start? If so, does the electric start turn over the engine? If not, I think Marshall may be hinting at engine seizure. I'd also take off the belt cover and see if the belts are slack. If they aren't, check to see why.

pull the spark plug out and see if it will turn over.....................

should spin easily ....

if not your problem might be internal...........

Hi...

Maybe the drivetrain or auger are still engaged... ?
Should be able to pull slowly and turn the engine over...

My 1128 also had a similar problem where the pull start was very difficult. I plugged in the electric start & started the endgine & the next time, the pull start was easy to pull again.

I think what happened was that I did not let the cord retract 100 percent before the next pull. Somehow, the second pull was very tight & did not let me pull out all the way, so I use the electric start because I did not want to break the cord. I don't know what I did, but the pull start kind of reset itself.

Yeah, thank god for Electric start! Every time my machine acts up when trying to pull start it I plug her in and push the button and thats that! - Kris

I wonder if the compression release mechanism has failed inside the motor. This would make it very hard to pull-start but the motor would run normally. -Bob

Yes there is oil in the engine and she does start with the electric start.

Maybe it's as simple as the pull start mechanism is screwed up?

It could just be on the compression stroke. It's harder to pull when it is. - Kris
