The MSDS listed in the above post makes me chuckle, as it is at least 10 years old & lists propane as the propellant for the aerosol version of WD-40.
WD-40 was widely being used as a starter fluid in many pieces of older tractors & equipment, due to the flammability of the propane. The WD-40 propellant was changed in the late 90’s to C02 to accommodate transportation & shipping restrictions on volatile materials.
The present WD-40 formulation, per a current MSDS, looks more like this: CAS 8052-41-3 Stoddard Solvent 50% CAS 64742-65-0 Petroleum base oil 25% CAS 64742-47-8 Naptha 15% The solvents evaporate & leave a residual oily film that will provide light lubrication & rust protection.
